Immigration & Entry
A comprehensive professional manual for visas, residence permits, and labor compliance in the United Republic of Tanzania.
The e-Visa Framework
Tanzania's primary entry mechanism for tourists and business visitors. Applications must be submitted via the official Immigration portal (immigration.go.tz).
Standard Visa ($50): Single entry, valid for 90 days. Most common for first arrivals.
Multiple Entry ($100): Mandatory for US citizens; valid for 12 months with 90-day stays.
Business Visa ($250): Specifically for those attending meetings, fixing machinery, or short professional assignments (max 90 days).
Processing Time: Typically 10-14 days. Apply well in advance of your travel date.
Residence Permits (Long-Term)
Mandatory for anyone staying longer than 90 days. These are managed by the Immigration Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Class A (Investors): For self-employed foreigners. Requires proof of $250,000+ investment (TIC registered).
Class B (Experts): For employed professionals with specific skills. Requires an employer sponsor.
Class C (Others): For researchers, students, volunteers, and retired persons.
Validity: Usually issued for 2 years, renewable upon meeting compliance requirements.
The Work Permit (Ministry of Labor)
Often confused with a Residence Permit, a Work Permit is a separate document issued by the Labor Commissioner that grants the right to work.
Class B Quota: Companies are limited in foreign staff. You must prove the skill isn't available locally.
Understudy Rule: For every foreign expert, you must officially assign a Tanzanian 'understudy' to be trained for the role.
Succession Plan: A clear timeline for when the expert's role will be localized is often required for renewals.
E-Permit Portal: Applications are now fully digital through the Prime Minister's Office portal.
Border Compliance & Health
Essential regulations for physical entry at ports like DAR, JRO, and ZNZ.
Yellow Fever: Mandatory if transiting through endemic zones for >12 hours. Certificates are checked.
Passport Validity: Must be valid for at least 6 months with 2 blank pages minimum.
CTA (Carrying on Temporary Assignment): A specific short-term permit for consultants not staying long-term.
Family Permits: Spouses and children (dependents) require specific entries on the primary permit-holder's file.
The 'Working on a Tourist Visa' Risk
Tanzania maintains strict enforcement of work permit regulations. Conducting business meetings or professional assignments while on a standard Tourist Visa is a serious offense that can lead to heavy fines, immediate deportation, and being blacklisted from reentry. Always ensure you have a **Business Visa** or a **Work Permit**.
Official Government Portal
Only use the official .go.tz domains for your applications. Avoid third-party "fast-track" agents who are not officially recognized.
